It was kind of adorable, the way the pilot seemed to have no idea what was going on. Vincent had watched the blonde man’s emotions growing stronger during the course of Avalanche’s quest for Sephiroth with some amusement, observed the pilot’s confusion and slight fear for his own reactions as his feelings got the better of him, seen the way Cid watched him from the corner of his eyes, blushing and swearing and burying himself in mechanical work as the man realized what he was doing, trying so hard to deny what there really was no denying.

It wasn’t so very hard to understand how the pilot might be bewildered of his own feelings, Vincent mused. Cid had grown up in a small town and even when he started to work for ShinRa he’d been stationed in the middle of nowhere since you couldn’t, for obvious reasons, launch a space rocket in the middle of a populated area.

So Cid had grown up with boy-meets-girl as the only way of living your life and as rumor had it, was engage to Shera.

Vincent, however, had grown up in quite different circumstances. He’d moved to Midgard as a teenager and joined the Turks shortly afterwards – not an environment that made it possible to stay innocent of the great varieties of love and lust in the world, and Vincent had found out quite a lot about himself. Although he’d never slept around the way some of the Turks did, he’d had his fair share of lovers. He knew what he was and what he wanted and he could most certainly read Cid Highwind like an open book.

At first it was friendship that drew them together – they were the two oldest men in Avalanche, except for Barret who had a daughter and an entirely different life. But as they stayed up late at night, talking and drinking endless cups of tea and smoking cig after cig – all three mostly on Cid’s account – it became very clear that the pilot started to grow feelings much deeper than friendship for the tall, dark man with the guarded smile and dangerous eyes.

It was also quite obvious that he didn’t know what to do with those feelings. Confusion and bewilderment started to grow into fear, although he was far too stubborn to let go of his friendship with Vincent simply because of that. Cid was a brave man even when it came to his own emotions.

Vincent never did anything to encourage him even though he’d been sure of his own  feelings for quite some time. Cid would be his, but there were no sense in pushing the man. With the patience of a true predator he bided his time.

Cid’s first laps came during the celebration of defeating Sephiroth; all of Avalanche but Vincent were slightly drunk, singing and caroling on the Highwind’s deck. Cid, being Cid, caught them one after one in great bear hugs, all rough and friendly. Until he reached Vincent.

Uncomfortable with such public displays of affection, Vincent stood stiff as tanned, warm arms closed around him, which meant the much shorter pilot barely reached to his chin with the blonde head.

“Yer a bloody giant, Valentine,” Cid chuckled. “C’me here.” He started to pull down Vincent’s neck. Perhaps he’d expected Vincent to fight it because he seemed all surprised when their faces were suddenly rubbing against one another’s.

Lips met lips.

Vincent barely had time to register his own small shiver of delight before Cid tore away, red faced and stammering.

“Shit Vince, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean ta…” And before Vincent could say a word, Cid hurried away across the deck, not looking back.

One week later he married Shera. Vincent was invited to the wedding along with the rest of Avalanche and although Cid didn’t avoid him it was obvious that the gunman’s knowledgeable little smile made him slightly nervous.

The marriage crashed and burned less than two months after the wedding. As soon as Vincent heard about it he bought a bottle of Cid’s favorite whiskey and drove all night.

He arrived in Rocket Town at daybreak; Cid had kept his old house and from the light in the kitchen obviously had an early morning. Or rather a late night Vincent amended when a red-eyed and even more than usually unshaved pilot opened the door.

Cid smiled unsteadily.

“Took ya long enough.”

“It’s a long drive.” Vincent smiled back. “I brought you some whiskey.”

“I think I’ve had enough.” Blue eyes met red; vulnerable, hurt, nervous. But not afraid anymore.

Vincent carefully put down the bottle and cupped Cid’s face in his hands, looking down on him. Strong arms snaked around his waist and Cid sighed in mock exasperation.

“Yer a bloody giant, Valentine.”

“That only matters when we’re both standing up.” Vincent mumbled and lowered his face.

And this time Cid didn’t pull away.
