They hadn’t met under the best of circumstances. On different sides on the roof of ShinRa Headquarters, facing off on top of the building still raw from the massacre that Jenova and Sephiroth had left behind in their madness. One on the side of Avalanche. One on the side of the new president, Rufus ShinRa. Mortal enemies.

But there had been something there, something that overrode or perhaps rode on the very fires of adrenaline and battle and the forging of two sides. She was dark, lithe and lethal, loyal to a fault. He was fiery and edgy, with scars from former battles on his face and not as jaded as he tried to pretend.

The attraction had been immediate even from across the rooftop floor. They had both known, as if the air was ladled with pheromones.

It was inevitable that they meet again. It was difficult, of course, but they stole moments here and there during the seemingly endless flight-and-pursuit that kept ShinRa and Avalanche closer than their leaders might have liked. She always had doubts, feeling as if she betrayed her friends, but they all burned away in their passion. He always felt a bit guilty but tried to  - at least in the beginning – to tell himself that he really owed these people nothing, that they were convenient and that was all. Even after he stopped lying to himself, she could still drown all his misgivings with one look from her dark eyes.

The hunt went on, Sephiroth was finally defeated and Rufus, against all odds, survived. In the chaos that followed they were briefly separated but when she found him again, she had something to tell. Something that could not be hidden for much longer.

They gathered Avalanche and ShinRa at neutral grounds – Cosmo Canyon – to explain. He was better with words, she’d said, so he would try to explain. Feeling a curious mixture of embarrassment and pride he cleared his throat.

“Yes. So. There’s something I…we must tell you.” He cast a glance at her sitting comfortably just a few steps behind him. “That is…we have met for some time now and…..well, nature takes its course and….here they are.”

She nodded and gently pushed the two children forward. They tumbled into the room, already rough playing and paying very little attention to the collective gasps that went up through the room. They had their mother’s dark sleek fur but little fires were burning at the tips of their head tentacles and the boy had a red collar around his neck that would one day grow into a full mane like his father’s.

Rufus ShinRa looked at his watchdog with utter betrayal and Cloud couldn’t help but facepalm.

“Oh Nanaki,” he sighed. “What have you done?”
