Capey tore through the demons at the zombie; it had been hiding wrapped around Cid's chest since Kadaj handed it over and now it threw itself at Hollander, wrapping around him, tight, tight. Dirty nails tore shreds out of it as the zombie roared and fought, unable to see anything, but Capey wasn't alive in the common sense and it held on. Like a python it closed its grip harder and harder, locking its opponents arms and legs, ignoring the filthy teeth that tried to bite through, hugging until bodily liquids started pouring out of the *thing*, staining Capey, hugging until it heard bones crunch and the strange *popping*sound of inner organs bursting, hugging until the decayed body was nothing more than a pool of disgusting meat and crushed bones and oozing liquids.

Cid staggered to his feet; the bullet had only grazed him but head wounds bleed like nobody's business. He glanced at the soft squishy pile of goo that had once been Hollander but ignored it. He had to close the disk, but he had no fucking idea how. The demons were still being sucked in there, still disappearing. The pilot almost jumped out of his skin as something new moved on the other side of the room, but sagged with relief as it was only Tseng, sitting up.

"Hey, wasn't ya shot?"

"Shot, stabbed, electrocuted, beat up…it happened all the time. By now, I've learned to come prepared." Grimacing with pain, Tseng sat up and opened his jacket; there was a bullet proof vest underneath. "I just need to catch my breath for a second…"

"Well, hurry up! This thing's gonna suck Vince's demons back ta hell and if I have ta jump in there and tear them back out where they belong then things might get messy!"

"Something in the mako tube feeds the gateway. Turn it off!"

Cid was a mechanic, a damn fine mechanic and he could understand the workings of just about anything, given time. All kinds of apparatuses were built in a logical fashion after all, and you needed only see the pattern to turn it off or on or make it do whatever you wanted. Years of experience had taught him that.

Years of experience had also taught him that beating the shit out things worked almost as good. He slammed Venus Gospel down on the thick cable leading from the mako tube.

There was an inverted explosion; the disk stopped moving, the demons, now free from the sucking vacuum fled in joyous freedom; a ghostly tongue licked Cid's face before Galian bounded past him, back towards Vincent. How the demon-shades would get there past leagues and leagues of land and ocean, Cid didn't know, but he didn't' doubt they'd succeed.

Tseng got up on his feet and moved slowly over to the mako tube that was now quickly fading it's garish light. He touched the glass, remarkably soft, as a man who has finally found redemption. Cid cast a glance at him, and then recoiled at what he saw in the tube.

"Holy shit," he said reverently. "Is that…"

"Yes," Tseng said softly. "This is my mission here. This is Zack Fair."

It was awkward to fit three people into a two-seat plane, and no less so because one was uncurious, heavy, naked and had hair spikes that would put even Cloud to shame. The fact that Zack was dripping wet with slimy mako residue might have helped a little, though. Capey offered to serve as blanket with an eagerness that it usually only showed when it came to giving Yazoo a bath.

"Aw, give it up." Cid frowned at the red cape that seemed to cling a bit to happily to the young man's anatomy. "He ain't *that* cute!"

Capey only fluttered its tendrils and ignored him, squeezing Zack happily.

Tseng, who was stuck in the backseat with said Soldier in his lap, was strangely quiet and stoic about it to.

They landed on the yard outside the Valenwind home the next day, and Cid jumped out of the plane.

"I need to get to Midgard…." Tseng started underneath the still unconscious Zack, but was interrupted.

"Tough shit, 'cause *I* need ta be here. Get Zack ta Angeal, he'll help." With a last wave, Cid ran for his house, leaving Tseng to the delicate task of trying to slide out from underneath the Soldier.

Vincent was sitting on the porch, wrapped in a blanket, looking a bit tired and worn, but very much alive. Reeve, who had been hovering around him, smiled gently as he saw Cid come running and discretely took himself elsewhere.

Cid threw himself his arms around his tall husband, holding him close. Vincent hugged back, a bit weaker than usually but warm. And alive. So alive.

"The demons told me what happened. They told me about the gate to Hell. They said you saved them….and me. By closing the gate." He mumbled in Cid's ear, drawing deep, deep of the pilot's sweet smell.

"Yeah, and don't ya start angsting over it. The demons left in this world are all in Niebelheim Mansion. Let 'em have it. Even demons don't like Hell." Cid didn't want to ever let go.

"I…I suppose you are right. Everything wants to live, after all. And Cid…" He lifted the blonde's head, kissing him deeply. "I love you."

"I love ya to."

Bringing Zack to Angeal was helped by the fact that the Sephlings weren't there; Genesis had taken them out for ice cream. Angeal said very little as his puppy was put in a spare bed, still unconscious and unresponsive, but the big man looked like he'd cry as soon as the reality of what happened sunk in properly. Tseng helped to wipe the young man off, cleaning him up somewhat and getting him into one of Angeal's old t shirt before he started to explain.

"Hollander was using Zack's power to fuel the gate, like a tiny mako reactor." Tseng hesitated. "I don't know how he got a hold of him. But he had been using his life force for weeks. I don't' think anyone but Zack would have survived that."

"He was the strongest of us. Except maybe Sephiroth." Angeal touched the spiky hair gently. "He was like my son, you know."

"I know." Tseng nodded. "He was a good friend of mine, and I can't say that about many people in this world."

"Everyone liked Zack."

"Yes." Tseng handed over a file, marked with a red stamp of Confidential. "These are his. from Aerith."

"I'll give them to him when he wakes up."

Tseng sighed. Damn Soldiers. Sometimes he suspected they were so daft just so Turks would have to keep busy.

"*If* he wakes up, Angeal." He said gently. "We don't know what happened to him. We can't know…what has happened to his mind and body. ShinRa doctors can…"

"I'm never letting ShinRa near him again!"

Tseng nodded. He had expected no less.

Epilogue

The sound of fluttering wings woke Cid; Vincent was still too exhausted by his near death and slept heavily in the dark night. Groggily, Cid got up as someone knocked on the window - two storey's up.

"Wha'?" He managed to ask as Genesis face hovered outside, wing holding him up.

"My apologize, captain." In the moon light there was a strange tension to the russet man's face, an uncharacteristic pain. "But I had to talk to you. Alone."

"I'm tired…" Rubbing his face, Cid tried to focus.

"Hollander. You saw Hollander." Genesis crossed his arms over his chest, as if trying to keep something in. "Is he…was he…"

Cid looked up, *really* looked at the beautiful face drawn taut by anger and pain. He'd seen that face before. The Sephlings had it when they thought of the labs. Vincent had it when he thought of Hojo.

"Thought ya said he helped ya with the degeneration." He said softly.

"He did. For a price." Genesis was strong; he did look away. And in his eyes Cid saw no shame; the general knew what had happened to him was not his fault.

"He's dead. Crushed as a bug. I shoved his sorry ass remains inta Hell. Litteral Hell."

Some of the pain left Genesis face. His shoulders seemed less tense.

"Thank you, captain. Go back to bed now."

Cid nodded and closed the window as the winged ex-Soldier flew away towards his home. Bringing back Zack might start some things all over. But at least others had been put to rest, once and for all.
