A/N: For New Year Resolution Contest!


”…and I promise ta quit smokin’…” Some cigarette ash fell on the paper, but Cid brushed it away and kept writing, tongue sticking out of the side of his mouth. “….and I should stop drinking so gods-damned much tea….” He carefully moved his teacup out of the way from his elbow. The poor abused note in front of him had suffered enough to have to withstand tea stains as well. “Probably should cut down on the swearing as well.” He scribbled on.

“Chief, what are you doing?” True to form, Vincent seemed to materialize out of nowhere behind the struggling pilot.

“Holy fucking hell, Vince! Ya almost scared me ta death!” Cid grabbed his chest with one hand and his cig with the other.

“My apologize.” The gunman smiled faintly as Cid took a sip of tea and a long drag on his fag to steady himself, muttering curses under his breath. “What is this?” He took the paper, trying to read in between cig ash and tea stains.

“It’s my New Year’s Resolution.” Leaning back in the chair, Cid smiled proudly up at his boyfriend. “Apart from that, I promise I’ll stop goofin’ around so much with the Tiny Bronco and get down ta some real cargo hauling business.”

Vincent frowned, still staring at the note.

“Why would you promise this?” he asked quietly.

“’Cause,” grabbing his hand and gently pulling it, Cid coaxed the gunman into his lap. “’Cause I wanna be a better man. Fer ya, Vince. Ya deserve a better man.”

“I already have the best man, chief.”  Vincent smiled gently at the concerned blue eyes. “You are a good man, Cid Reginald Highwind. The best man. I love you just the way you are. Why would I ever want anyone else?”

“Yeah, but if I stop smokin’ and cursin’ and drinkin’ and start making some real money….” Cid played with a lock of black hair.

“If I wanted a short rich blonde with no social vices I’d marry Rufus ShinRa.” A claw on his lips stopped Cid’s protesting. “Cid, New Year’s Resolutions should not be something that stops you from being you. It shouldn’t be something that takes away the things you love. Besides, you’d never be able to keep these promises for even a day.” Vincent crumbled up the note and tossed it away.

“Yeah, well that might be true. Still it was nice ta dream.” Putting both hands around the strong back, Cid pulled him closer into the embrace. “So, what’s yer resolution fer next year, Vince?”

Vincent mulled the question  over in his head.

“I promise not to get shot and experimented on by a mad scientist.” He finally said.

“Ah, yeah. Good one.”
